Crusade Against Violence
Kindergarten 3rd Grade
- Introduction
- How many of you have pets
raise your hand!
- What kind of pets do you have
Talk to each child and give them an opportunity
to
tell you what kind of pets they have.
(Any child who doesnt have a pet
tell them "Well, you can share our
pets today!")
- Ask the children if they know what "abuse" is and give examples of people
being
mean to animals. Ask "Have you ever seen anyone be mean to an animal?"
Animals have feelings too! A pinch, or hit, or kick HURTS! Just like it hurts if
someone were to do that to you!
- If you saw someone being mean on the playground to an animal, what would you
do?
Listen to some answers and then direct "Thats right! Tell your teacher or an
adult!"
- If you see someone being mean to a classmate, what would you do? Direct them
to
positive answers.
If children say they would "Kung Fu or kick or hit" someone for being mean to
a child or animal
let them know it would be much better to tell an adult. That they
could put themselves in danger by trying to stop the situation themselves. Some children
feel very powerful and competentto physically take on an adult.
- Animal Control
- Share the World VIDEO (7 minutes)
- Tell the students how to approach a new animal:
- Ask the owner if you may pet the animal
- Go up slowly and put your hand out so the animal can smell it
- If the animal pulls away, leave it alone
- If the animal is ok, you may pet it
- Do NOT go up and try to pet a strange animal
